26 original alphabet paintings by the icon of Tiki culture.Shag: A to Z presents, quite simply, 26 original paintings corresponding to the letters of the alphabet. Each painting is accompanied by a short verse extolling the pleasures of a hedonistic lifestyle and the virtues of overindulgence.Shag: A to Z is the creation of Josh Agle, a painter and designer from Southern California who is probably better known by the name he signs on his paintings, "Shag." Shag has spent the last decade creating a body of work based on his idiomatic aesthetic preferences, a world of mid 20th century modern architecture and design, populated by hedonists, supplicants, and indifferent women. The paintings themselves celebrate consumerism and consumption on vividly colored, sharply rendered panels; the characters drink, smoke and eat in lavish, stylish surroundings. Since 1996 his work has been displayed in galleries and museums in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Australia.Shag: A to Z is the latest BLAB! Storybook, a series showcasing sequential artists from Monte Beauchamp's annual BLAB! anthology. Each volume is presented in a faux-children's book format, though aimed squarely at adults and young adults.

From drawing to paintings to installations, visual art in the 20th-century US has been marked by an explosion of productivity by Jews. Their work reflects profound historical and cultural issues, such as what it means to be a Jewish artist in the western tradition of Christian art, and what it means, as Jews, to be painters of the specifically American experience. Ori Soltes focuses primarily on the work of 20th-century Jewish painters to explore themes ranging from the trials of immigration, depictions of urban life and politics, renderings of the Holocaust, and the reconstitution of Judaism in recent years by feminist painters and Soviet emigree artists. The astonishing array of work represented in this book sometimes displays overtly Jewish themes and symbols; other paintings are included for their importance in the general development of 20th-century painting. Balancing individual biographies of painters, stylistic analysis, and thematic interpretations, Soltes offers a remarkable survey of 20th-century American Jewish painting. Despite the diverse range of images, themes, a common thread among most of these paintings is the concept of tikkun olam--of repairing or fixing the world. Most of the artists represented here demonstrate an interest in the social, as well as the aesthetic, import of their work. We see this concern for social betterment in the urban paintings of the Soyer brothers, in the "political" paintings of Ben Shahn, in the Holocaust-inflected works of numerous artists, and in the more contemporary work of Joyce Ellen Weinstein decrying violence and racism. Such works of despair and repair are balanced by dozens of paintings of celebration, joyous experiments in how to convey Jewishness and Judaism on canvas into the 21st century. Concise, elegant, and sophisticated, Fixing the World is a teaching tool, a pleasure to read, and a feast for the eyes.

MOSE T A TO Z: THE FOLK ART OF MOSE TOLLIVER creates an intimate portrait of the life of a unique African-American who overcame his disabilities through his art making. In the winter of 1982, the American art world was jolted by a controversial exhibition held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The morning after the opening reception, art editors questioned in newspapers across the country, Is this art? This groundbreaking exhibition, Black Folk Art in America: 1930-1980, brought together for the first time the work of America¹s greatest living folk art masters. The exhibition¹s organizer, Robert Bishop, even went so far as to declare that the work of one artist in particular was of equal value; to Picasso¹s, suggesting that;you can hang him beside a Picasso and you have the same creativity and deep personal vision; That artist is the subject of a new book by Montgomery native Anton Haardt, entitled Mose T. from A to Z: The Folk Art of Mose Tolliver. This full-color, 100-page volume is the first to be devoted entirely to the life and work of the last surviving artist from the Corcoran exhibition. In it Ms. Haardt relates the story of Mose Tolliver¹s turn to painting after a crippling accident left him unable to work. She charts the evolution of his career, from the days when he hung his paintings in a tree in his front yard in Montgomery, Alabama, selling them for a dollar each, through his rise to renown in the folk art world and far beyond. Additional essay contributions from scholars Lee Kogan and Regenia Perry situate Tolliver¹s work within the history of American folk art and discuss the stylistic originality of this visionary American artist. The author Anton Haardt says; I first purchased a Mose T titled Tico Bird ; in 1969 and have never stopped. The strength his work is his lack of self-consciousness as to what his art is or should be. It is his sheer impulse to create, and therein lies its power. When I first saw Mose?s paintings hanging in trees many years ago, I took an unexpected delight in his muddy pink;Sprupe Ladies; and misshapen self-portraits. In one way the paintings seemed ugly, and in another way I was charmed by their raw beauty. Since then the allure of folk art for me has never waned. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In terms of the art history of our country, I would say in comparing Tolliver's work to Picasso - Mose's art is of equal value - you can hang beside a Picasso and you have the same kind of creativity and deep personal vision Robert Bishop, Director of the American Folk Art Museum ---------------------------------------------------------------- Locomotives behind artists are as necessary as the art itself, and thanks to Anton Haardt, many of our regional artists have been able to live and even flourish from their craft. Nall - Artist, Writer, Director of Nall Foundation ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bill and Hillary Clinton gave Ted and I a Mose Tolliver painting as a wedding present. I smile every time I pass it no matter what else my day has brought me. That's art. Mary Steenburgen, Academy Award Winning Actress ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I must thank Anton Haardt for sharing Mose's story with us. It¶s anexcellent story and excellent journal of an amazing artist who will see fame in his own lifetime after a disaster that caused him to pick up apaintbrush- and share his inner thoughts with us.
